History

The secret beach of Capri, since 1906

Torre Saracena is one of the oldest bathing establishments on Capri, founded in 1906 as a quaint trattoria with a down-home, authentic atmosphere. At that time the port of Marina Grande was mainly a beach, and a single daily steamer connected the island with the mainland in Naples. The now-famous Piazzetta of Capri was still far from being known as a place to see and be seen, and it was the site of a local market.

Swimming in the sea and spending the whole day on the beach wasn't a custom at that time. People came to Torre Saracena to have lunch and perhaps take a rowboat tour out to the nearby Faraglioni sea stacks.

The Torre Saracena beachfront was originally managed by Giovanni di Pennaulo and his wife Raffaela. It is currently managed by Giovanni's nephew Domenico, along with Domenico's children Gemma and Giovanni, keeping their family's historic tradition alive with a style of unpretentious, homespun hospitality.
